What is prophecy?

Prophecy in the Bible:

So what is prophecy?  And why is it important?  God has chosen certain people to His prophets and proclaim the future.  Prophets are not good guessers, they do proclaim the future because they receive revelation from God who knows the end from the beginning and gives them His words to say.  It is best to use scripture to explain scripture.  In Isaiah, chapter 46:9-10 (NKJV), God stated thru His prophet:

   Remember the former things of old,

    For I am God, and there is no other;

    I am God, and there is none like Me,

   Declaring the end from the beginning,

    And from ancient times things that are not yet done,

    Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,

    And I will do all My pleasure,’

In vs 11, God stated:

Indeed I have spoken it;

    I will also bring it to pass.

    I have purposed it;

    I will also do it.

Peter explains the role and purpose of the prophets:

Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
