Many of you will know Joyce Meyer and be familiar with her work and life story. Others will have never
heard of her or her story. Our family first met Joyce through her TV ministry when we were just flipping through channels.
At that time, back in 2002, it was a time of need for our family. We had a need for a closeness with God that was lacking..
Joyce is a excellent teacher and her work helped fill that void and so each of us could establish a much closer relationship
Joyce Meyer grew up in a family with an alcoholic abusive father. She was sexually, physically and
emotionally abused by her alcoholic father. Her mother ignored Joyce's situation and did not protect her. At age
18, she left home immediately and married the first man who showed interest in her. That marriage was another disaster.
She later met Dave Meyer, a kind and Godly man who married her after her divorce. But she had a long way to go and a
lot of baggage.
I have heard Joyce speak many times. And read several of her many books. Her interest in God's
word helped her overcome her situation and changed her life. Despite all the problems she grew up with, she never had
professional counseling but rather relied on God's Word. Not only has this changed her life, but it has developed into
a world wide ministry. Joyce has said this whole change was impossible, at least through man. She had only
a high school diploma, determination and a whole lot of extra baggage. She says what happened on her journey was only
possible with God. I believe her.
Joyce was filled with the Spirit in 1976. At that time, God told her she would go everywhere to teach
His Word. Joyce started a bible study group in her home. Then in 1980, she joined the staff of a church
in St. Louis, MO. and became an associate pastor. In 1983, God called her to start her own ministry. She
had to give up a job that she was secure in and loved. She began holding local conferences and had a fifteen-minute
radio spot. She aired her first TV show in 1993. Since that time their ministry has grown and grown. Her
show, "Enjoying Everyday Life," now goes into hundreds of TV and radio stations worldwide in over twenty foreign languages.
Their ministry now distributes over 4.5 billion teaching tapes and CDs worldwide. God has used this ministry greatly.
From these humble, difficult and impossible beginnings she, along with Dave and their family, have brought
forth a world wide ministry that touches and changes many. She has studied the Word extensively. She has a God
given ability to take the Word and bring it down to where someone like me can understand it. In my opinion, her gift
is communication along with this ability to make the Word come alive. To get where she is, she had to walk with God
every step of the way. Hers is not a ministry made by man or an overnight success. Her walk was long, difficult
and must have, at times, seemed almost impossible. She got a word from God, in prayer, years ago that all this would
happen. And it has. She says God had to shape her along the way to get her ready the things He had in plan for
Yes Joyce had a hard start. But God did not waste any of her suffering. That which she had gone
through has become a signficant part of her message. And an inspiration to others who are going through trials right
now. God wastes nothing, not even our trials.
If you haven't heard Joyce preach, find her (she is on many stations) and give her a listen and decide for
yourself. She talks about her story often and how God worked in her life and will work in your life.
Our family supports this Ministry, and we are partners, in a small way, with Joyce and their ministry.
Her husband, Dave Meyer, is a behind the scenes figure but a huge part of the ministry. This is only a short recount
of their story. For more information, we have links to go to their site.
